Known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports", the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby is this weekend - May 1. It's the "Run for the Roses" (Dan Fogelberg wrote a song entitle the same for the 1980 Derby) and it IS time for the official drink -- the Mint Julep.The Mint Julep, an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint and a sugar syrup is the traditional beverage of the race. The historic drink can be served in an ice-frosted silver julep cup but most Churchill Downs patrons sip theirs from a souvenir glass printed with all previous Derby winners.

My favorite for the race is Discreetly Mine because he is descended from Seattle Slew - the 1977 Triple Crown winner - and a superstar for horse lovers like me when I was a girl.
